Pickering’s: The Gin for All Social Animals

Pickering’s finds it roots in Bombay, India and is based on a recipe found on a fragment of paper dated 17 July 1947. It is only after 66 years that this recipe saw the light again… and we are really glad it did!

Also – Pickering’s Original 1947 recipe just turned 70! Cheers to many more years of producing delicious Gin!

The Story

Pickering’s Gin was founded in 2013 when the business partners and life-long friends decided to start making what they wanted and could not find on the market.

United by their love of delicious gin they bring to the table unique skills that make Pickering’s Gin so special. Marcus is a businessman who has been previously involved in the industry of distilling. It was his idea to turn Summerhall into a distillery for its great location and creative spur! He now takes care of branding, sales and communications. Matt is the mastermind behind the scenes, the engineer who made the renovation and construction of the distillery possible.

They begun experimenting and tweaking the original recipe at Summerhall Distillery, the first exclusive gin distillery to be established in Edinburgh for over 150 years!

Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, at Pickering’s is handmade. The core range has three multi-award winning, marvellously mixed gin but limited editions ones are often launched and sell out before they can be bottled!

The Distillery and Botanicals

There are 9 botanicals in each edition of Pickering’s: juniper, coriander, cardamom, angelica (cinnamon in the 1947 Gin), fennel, anise, lemon, lime and cloves. They are measured and macerated in the neutral grain spirit to extract the most flavour.. Play the video to know more!

Pickering’s Original 1947 Gin

The most special one in the Pickering’s core range and the one we chose to include in the Cool as a Cucumber Member’s Box! This edition is made precisely to the original recipe, as it was written down in Mount Mary, Bombay, in 1947. Here the botanical mix includes cinnamon, which adds a decidedly warming and spicy kick to the spirit.

It tastes spicier, sweeter and more intense than your regular London Dry. It’s just like a decadent trip back to the last days of the Raj. Cardamom, coriander, clove and cinnamon spice lead to a crisp, refreshing and long finish.

Perfect in a G&T and delicious in a Negroni!

The Other Gins in the Pickering’s Family

Pickerings also offers two other gins in the core range. Their signature Pickering’s Gin won Gold at the World Spirits Award in 2014 and in 2015 Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. It’s recipe is based on the original Bombay Recipe!

Pickering’s Gin Navy Strength was launched to celebrate becoming the official gin sponsor of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. It is affectionately known as the bearskin gin and, bottled at 57.1% ABV, this spirit is smooth, clean and powerful.
