6 Best Places to Drink Gin in London
Gin is thriving, the world is once again infatuated with this juniper based spirit and small-batch distilleries are popping up across the globe. The G&T is seeing a new lease of life, being served up in stunning glassware, with big ice and a beautiful array of garnishes, not to mention Fever-tree causing a stir in the mixer category with their natural tonic waters. Bartenders are offering a plethora of beautiful G&T’s and the classic gin-based cocktails have come roaring back into fashion too.
With gin’s resurgence, we’ve seen a vast array of ‘gin palaces’ arrive on the scene ready to serve you up the perfect concoction. Here are 5 of our favourite places to get a great gin drink in London.
Thought to have the one of the largest collection of gin in the UK – 261 at the last count – located just off Soho’s Golden Square (short walk from Piccadilly Circus) it has an urban feel with garage-style doors and bare concrete bar. Sample what seems to be an endless array of gins in a G&T, opt for a gin-based punch in tin and a whole load more modern and classic drinks. You can even join the Juniper Club on Mondays for tastings and masterclasses.
This is honestly a gin-lovers paradise! It’s home to The Ginstitute – where you can discover a Victorian gin bar and even blend your own gin. Here, you can order The Portobello Road Martini, made using the Star’s own No. 171 Portobello Road Gin; or be patriotic and sip a Queen Mother Cocktail.
City of London Distillery Bar (COLD Bar)
“If you can’t take the gin to the people, take the people to the gin.” The distillery opened in 2012 and now has a fantastic speakeasy-style cocktail bar looking over the beautiful copper still with a range of over 200 gins to try and pick from (including their own City of London Dry Gin). A distillery tour will tell you all you need to know about how the gin is made or take part in a masterclass or even create your own gin featuring a handpicked selection of botanicals.
Winner of the best independent gin bar this year! Boasting around 220 gins alongside a vast selection of rums too, this City basement bar has a fantastic atmosphere. Over half a millennia of history can be found in every drop of Gin and Rum at this bar and it is this history that Merchant House are looking to share – there is an element of education to enhance your experience there. Head over and find your new favourite gin or take even a masterclass. Alternatively, just sit back in the blue leather banquettes and try a vintage gin-based G&T or martini.
One of our favourite places, opening in 2010 their little house of gin has grown over the years to a collection of over 300 gins so you can choose from a huge range to make your perfect G&T or, if you really can’t decide, then go for one of their ‘gin flights’ and taste a few different ones with friends. A genuinely lovely place to enjoy a gin and they offer 7 different types of tonic too.
