The Healing Properties Of The Water In Slingsby Gin
What makes this London Dry so special? The answers lies in the “Spirit of Harrogate” that confers it a whole lot of heritage, tradition and history.
It all started back in 1571, when William Slingsby discovered the unique properties of the natural spring water from the Tewit Well in Harrogate. William was an adventurer who saw things differently from everyone else. He is the epitome of the Spirit of Harrogate and the founders of Slingsby’s Gin proudly named the spirit after him.
What’s the Spirit of Harrogate, you ask… Well, since William discovered the medicinal properties of the water, the most discerning individuals from across the globe have sought out the picturesque Yorkshire town to restore body, mind and soul by relaxing, indulging and socialising. The same feeling you get when you sip on a Slingsby G&T.
Slingsby launched its first London Dry in 2015 and from then on it opened its own flagship store with the gin experience and now has a range of four products: Slingsby London Dry Gin, Slingsby Yorkshire Rhubarb Gin, Slingsby Navy Strength Gin and Slingsby Vodka. All of these spirits won SO many of the most prestigious awards for the industry such as the silver medal in the San Francisco World Spirits competition in 2017 and the IWSC silver medal in 2016 to name a couple.
Most recently, Slingsby Gin became the official supplier and sponsor of The British and Irish Lions! They released a “Tour Edition” Gin for the occasion named “The Lions Gin”.
The Master Distiller, who is based at Langley Distillery in Birmingham, has 35 years’ experience in producing outstanding quality spirits. For him, no detail is ever too small as he sets to work with the 100-year old copper still and the finest ingredients.
The finest pure single grain spirit and is blended with water drawn from the world-famous Harrogate aquifer. The botanicals in the London dry are 24 in total – half of which are sourced from Rudding Parks Hotel Kitchen Garden in Harrogate. They include green and Jasmine tea supplied by Taylor’s of Harrogate, Seven Seas Rosemary, Silver Posie Thyme, Citrodorous Thyme, Vulgaris Thyme, Rhubarb, Sage, Lovage, Chervil, Hyssop, Primrose, Sweet Cicely & Oregano all supplied from the Kitchen garden of Rudding Park Hotel.. Nettle, Milk Thistle & Heather from surrounding Harrogate.
The Juniper is from Madagascar and the Angelica, Cassia, Orris Roots, Coriander Seed, Liquorice and Grapefruit are sourced from the finest suppliers around the world.
This London dry doesn’t go heavy on juniper and lemon/orange peel like the most classic gins. Grapefruit is preferred as the citrus element which gives it a softer flavour. An initial burst of refreshing citrus from the grapefruit base gives way to juniper before a very smooth herbaceous sweetness, led by sweet cicely and a light green tea scented with jasmine blossom. Enjoy with a premium tonic water on ice with a twist of grapefruit peel and fresh blueberries!
