We Have Tried Dà Mhìle Seaweed Gin and…

This Welsh distillery made history more than once, and after trying their gin, we totally get why!

The Story

The name Dà Mhìle (pronounced da-vee-lay) dates way back to 1992 when John Savage-Onstwedder, one of the founders of Teifi Farmhouse Cheese, commissioned the world famous Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown, Scotland to produce the world’s first organic whisky of the modern era to celebrate the year 2000. The last few bottles remaining are being hunted down by collectors.

After this initial huge success, John and his passion for outstanding drinks, applied for a distiller’s license to run a 350 litre state-of-the-art copper pot-still, even though the law in 2010 stated that the smallest pot-still for which a license could be granted could be 1500 litres.

It was a prescient HMRC officer who convinced John to file his application regardless of the regulation saying: “Those guidelines were written when custom’s officers were still roaming the hills with muskets to flush out the illegal stills, so as to make it more difficult to hide them. Put in your application and see what happens.”

Before he knew it, HMRC issued him what was most likely the first distiller’s license issued for a 350 litre still in UK history. After another 3 years of bureaucracies, John could finally start distilling.

Dà Mhìle Distillery produces excellent organic gin and whisky as well as new spirits like Apple Brandy and Sloe Gin with the ethos of delivering quality spirits at an honest price.

The is run by John’s eldest son, John-James, who studied the art of distilling extensively learning from the best in the industry. He is so good that first product won a True Taste Award for its first batch!

His second product, Dà Mhìle Botanical Farmhouse Gin was enthusiastically received by gin drinkers. And on St. David’s Day 2014 he released our popular Seaweed Gin, which is made with a selection of organic seaweed from the Newquay coast of West Wales and the West coast of Ireland. And this one was awarded a silver medal at the prestigious International Wine & Spirits Competition in 2015!

The botanicals and distillation method in the Gin are a secret, but their flavour is not! We have included them in our Sea Breeze Box for you to try them!

 Dà Mhìle Seaweed Gin

A bold, savoury gin made with a cut-down, hand selected variant of botanicals added to our small batch gin. Designed to complement seafood it is infused with handpicked seaweed from the Celtic coast for three weeks (this is a very long time, most botanicals are left to macerate only over night!), that gives it that lovely light green hue before being triple filtered and bottled.

As you crack the bottle open, the smell of the gin teleports you on the beach with its aroma of sea water. Lavender and pine are more evident on the nose, as well as juniper. The predominant taste is of fennel and eucalyptus with a long floral finish.

So, does it taste of seaweed? It tastes like the sea, fresh and savoury – definitely not fishy! You can tell that there is seaweed in there but its taste is blended and balanced with the other botanicals. Sign up to the ILoveGin club to try it!

Dà Mhìle Botanical Gin

This artisan farmhouse gin is made with 18 perfectly balanced botanicals. The nose is subtle fresh rose petals, then spice and a hint of juniper. The initial palate is floral with bitter, fresh notes of dandelion and peppery cloves.

The texture is silky, exuding a superb botanical mouth-feel finished by intense juniper tones and peppermint cool.
