The Aphrodisiac Gin: X-Gin

Gin for The Queens, Gods and Kings. This one is the cheekiest we have ever come across…
Blame it on the Incas and Mayas!

The Story

insta_6X-Gin was born in Belgium in late 2015 and the idea behind it was not a Gin at first… The founders started a company in 2014 that sold what Belgians know how to do best: chocolate!

When the humble Gin & Tonic started to take the country by storm, the divine illumination of producing cocoa based gin for friends & family came with it. And over 10,000 bottles have now been sold since the beginning of 2016!

Craftsmanship is at heart of X-Gin. The gin itself is bottled & distilled by De Moor (Aalst), one of the last strongholds of artisan gin making in Belgium. The labelling, the tube with cacao nibs attached to their full-sized bottles, and the packaging are all done by hand at a local workshop.

The bottle is a goldmine, literally. To get that golden finish, REAL plated gold is used. So if you were to save some 1,000 bottles, melt the gold… well we’d just be happy with that much gin!

Why We Like It

First of all, it is delicious. But that was kind of expected, you can’t go wrong with Colombian cocoa, a hint of vanilla, and an array of other delicious botanicals. X-Gin combines juniper berry with 15 herbs and several of the best spices known to man. It also works well as a digestive enjoyed neat on the rocks. After the first sip, no bitterness is felt – only a soft sweetness.

The packaging is super naughty, when you look closely at the bottle in the golden wheel… I’ll let you figure that one out.

Why the Name

mayaThis is an interesting one. It was a time of Incas and Mayans. A time of death by sacrifice and heavenly thirst that needed to be quenched. So the kings and queens gave orders to the brewing masters to create a godly nectar.

The secret drink was called “Xocolatl” (hence X-gin) and contained a slight hint of cocoa. It was only meant to be enjoyed by kings, queens and Gods – you should totally feel blessed to be able to drink this gin! It brought the gift of long life, intelligence and it instilled passion in those who had the fortune to drink it. According to legend it was the world’s first aphrodisiac. And so the “Xocolatl” recipe was revived and brought back as X-Gin.
