Schweppes 1783

Have you tried Schweppes 1783 Premium Mixers yet?!

The new Schweppes premium range is acclaim to Jacob Schweppe – the founder of one of the most iconic mixer brands in the drinks industry. The Schweppes 1783 range includes variety of premium mixers, perfect for pairing with gin. Noticeably different to the ‘standard’ Schweppes mixers… we know that you will love them!

The Story

Following 10 years of experimenting, in 1783 Jacob Schweppe invented the first industrial process of capturing and bottling bubbles. A self-described keen armature scientist, Schweppe originally produced the drinks as a treatment for a variety of ailments. It wasn’t until he took his business to the UK in the 1790s that Schweppes became the bottled mixer brand that we know today.

After being endorsed by Dr Erasmus Darwin, the grandfather of famed biologist Charles Darwin, the brand received a long line of royal warrants and was the official drink of the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace, London, in 1851. The years that followed were so highly successful they saw the Schweppe invention passed into history and a momentum known as ‘Schweppervescence’, sweep the UK.

International growth saw the Schweppes bottle travel across the globe – from Arabian deserts, to South American rainforests! No longer isolated to treating illness, the Schweppes portfolio went on to include a range of carbonated beverages including tonics, ginger beer and sparkling fruit juices. Schweppes even enjoyed a brief, yet successful period of producing cider made from British apples. Before the Schweppes Cyder brand was shelved in 1939, it was awarded a gold medal at the London Brewers’ Exhibition in 1928.

The outbreak of World War II saw Schweppes discontinue its Indian tonic water, as quinine stocks were required for medical use. However, consumer demand was helped by government recognition that soft drinks would help maintain the morale of Brits! In 1948 Schweppes were able to re-launch its full range of drinks. Thanks to a strong advertising campaign during the war years, which promised a return in all its glory, Schweppes had a significant amount of orders to fulfill; a popularity that ensured its future over the following 69 years.

During the 1960s Schweppes launched its ‘slimline’ range, and sales of low-calorie tonics and mixers outweighed those of full-sugar products. After acquiring Schweppes in the late 1990s, the Coca-Cola Company continued a strong advertising campaign which saw the likes of John Cleese appear in television adverts, as well as advertising in high-class magazines such as Vogue, Punch and Tattler. The Schweppes brand, which has a different range in Europe to the UK, saw Nicole Kidman and Uma Thurman act as Schweppes Brand Ambassadors for its European activity.

Today, with a large-scale brand such as Schweppes, it’s a common misconception that its mixers are ‘too big’ to be brilliant. However, thanks to the recent rise of premium tonic and mixer brands, Schweppes have released a new premium range of tonics in the UK. Noticeably different to the ‘standard’ Schweppes mixers and with six new, premium flavours on offer, the Schweppes promise to inspire a luxury drinking experience continues.
