This is Christmas! Copperfield Gin

“Turning up his cuffs – as if, poor fellow, they were capable of being made any more shabby – [he] compounded some hot mixture in a jug with gin and lemons and stirred it round and round and put it on the hob to simmer.”

From Charles Dickens to Catherine Miller, gin has always held a connection with Christmas in the literary world. Of course, we firmly believe that transfers into our literal festive sphere, and we are very excited to share this time with you all!

This is Christmas!

Copperfield gin is hand-bottled and hand-labelled. Embellished with a stunning illustration of interwoven botanicals overlaid with rich copper foiling and pays homage to book covers from the late 19th century.

Dr Christopher Smart and his wife Professor Katherine Smart launched the Surrey Copper Distillery in 2018, and created a gin based on a recipe penned by Ambrose Cooper in his Complete Distiller first published in 1757. This gin brings history to life!

The Story

Chris and Katherine are avid collectors of rare and antiquarian books. Surrey Copper Distillery is inspired by literature, and Cooper’s book was the first manual to the art of distillation and remains an important reference work to this day.

The couple’s first product was Copperfield London Dry Gin, which uses the heart of the 1757 Cooper recipe with a few modern tweaks.  The Copperfield name is inspired by Dickens’ classic novel and further ‘editions’ (2 and 3) have followed.

The gin’s development process started in the distillery’s state-of-the-art spirits laboratory which houses Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, two 2-litre copper pot stills. The recipe was then refined and scaled up in Alice, a 20 litre small-batch still.   Full scale production in Clara, a 300 litre carterhead solid copper still, commenced in early 2019.

Copperfield gin is hand-bottled and hand-labelled.  Its distinctive book-shaped bottle perfectly fits the hand for pouring and looks great on any drinks shelf.  It is embellished with a stunning illustration of interwoven botanicals overlaid with rich copper foiling and pays homage to book covers from the late nineteenth century.  It is elegant and utterly unmistakable.
